Electrical Maintenance Journeyman

Represented by Local 223 UWUA

Length of Apprenticeship

Normally 5 years, on the job training, supported by local Community College classes.

Description

Electrical Maintenance Journeymen, (EMJ), work on all components relative to the Electrical System. Their work is primarily done in Stations and Substations, but may involve remote locations such as customer’s property and power plant mats. They maintain electrical, mechanical, pneumatic and hydraulic equipment. The equipment they service may operate at voltages from less than 100 volts to 345,000 volts. EMJ’s may lead the work of two or up to twenty other maintenance men. They maintain tools and other equipment, apply test voltages, make out reports and approve equipment to be placed back in service. They work on energized as well as de-energized components. They work on various DC circuits and batteries. EMJ’s interpret and work from blueprints and many other types of drawings.

Working Conditions

EMJ’s work both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather conditions. Because they inspect and maintain equipment that is normally energized, they must be cautious of all the dangers of contacting live, energized equipment. EMJ’s sometimes work aloft, and so they either erect scaffolding or work from ladders. A lot of their work is in cramped or narrow quarters. They work with hand and power tools. They may be called out to make emergency repairs due to failures, and sometimes are placed on shifts. An EMJ is very safety conscience and must understand the limitations of working in a restricted area because of nearby hazards, both physical and electrical. They drive a company vehicle from their headquarters to the job and must maintain a valid drivers license. They must pass a physical exam and be able to lift up to 125 pounds.

Education

A high school diploma or G.E.D. certificate is required.

Wage

The current (2008) rate for the apprentice electrical maintenance journeyman is $22.41 per hour to start. An EMJ’s top pay is $31.42
